ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Pride Week is kicking off with a new event that’s aimed at getting every generation involved.

This year, the group is hosting the city’s first-ever “Silver Pride.”

“This year we really thought about people in the community who we’re not reaching and that includes some of our Silver Pride,” said Albuquerque Pride President Suzi Alexander.

This year’s event is an afternoon mixer with bingo, karaoke and snacks.

For Essie Romyns and other members of the SAGE Equality Group, Silver Pride is a welcomed inclusion to the lineup of events this year.

“I think it’s wonderful. This is the first time we’ve been to one of these affairs because it’s the first time they’re having it, so I think it’s great,” she said.

The SAGE group already does outreach to the LGBTQ+ community members who may be a little older, and this year Albuquerque Pride wants to celebrate “Pride 365” – something Essie and many others support.

“Why should we only have one month to celebrate, we’re here all the time. So I think it’s great that we can celebrate every day,” she said.
