ESPAÑOLA, N.M. — A troubled apartment complex remains on the brink of closure. The Española City Council voted not to purchase the La Vista Del Rio apartments to keep dozens of residents from eviction.

“We’re probably gonna be here til 9 o’clock discussing the Vista Del Rio apartments,” Mayor John Ramon Vigil said during the meeting Tuesday.

Española city councilors disagreed on events leading up to Tuesday’s vote, but they all agreed that saving the complex would be too expensive for the city.

A Colorado group had been working with the city to figure out a potential deal.

La Vista Del Rio is owned by the same company that owns the Santa Clara Apartments in Española. Residents of that complex were kicked out late last year, due to numerous fire code violations.

Councilors expressed disappointment they couldn’t figure out a plan to save La Vista Del Rio.
