Handgun found in student’s backpack at Belen HS

BELEN, N.M. — On just the second day of school, a gun was found in the backpack of a Belen High School student.

“Due to the diligence and alertness of one of our staff members, we found that one of our students was in possession of a handgun,” Belen High School Principal Sonia Lawson wrote in a letter to families.

No students or staff were reportedly in any immediate danger. According to the letter, the gun was never brought out.

In the letter, Lawson said the student will be “subject to school board policy and appropriate laws that govern weapons on school grounds, in addition to school imposed disciplinary measures.”
