ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Four years after a deadly hit-and-run crash in northeast Albuquerque, the driver was sentenced Wednesday.

Casey Zuni was given the maximum sentence and will serve four years in prison and two years on supervised probation.

In March, Zuni took a plea deal for hitting and killing Alyssa Barboa at the corner of Comanche and Pennsylvania around 1 a.m., July 18, 2018.

“Without my girl in my life even the smallest things are difficult,” said Valerie Jaramillo, Alyssa’s mom. “Alyssa would joke about me being in bed by 8 and now here I am surviving on little to no sleep. I don’t get a break from this nightmare. My heart aches every single day for my baby.”

Zuni offered an apology to the family but was then given his sentence. He will have to complete alcohol abuse treatment, use an interlock device on his car and get a full-time job or attend school upon release.
