ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — State leaders are voicing opposition to the proposed merger between Kroger and Albertsons. In New Mexico, Smith’s is the main brand under the Kroger banner.

In a letter to the Federal Trade Commission, Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver joined six other states asking the feds to block the merger. They say it would lead to less competition and fewer options for local farmers to sell their goods.

Kroger and Albertsons argue their merger would bring competition against larger retailers like Walmart.
