NMSP: One man dead in two-vehicle crash with Alamogordo police unit

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — A 77-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle crash with a police vehicle Wednesday.

New Mexico State Police are investigating the accident and identified the man who died as James Stone of La Luz. The crash happened just before noon on North White Sand Blvd.

Investigators believe the crash happened when an Alamogordo police vehicle, heading south to an emergency call with lights activated, hit a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck – driven by Stone – just as it had pulled into the street from a driveway.

Stone was later taken to a hospital where he died.

The 27-year-old female officer and her 25-year-old passenger, identified as a dispatcher on a ride-along, were taken to the hospital and are expected to be alright.

No cause of the accident is known but New Mexico State Police say alcohol containers were discovered in the pickup.

The crash remains under investigation by NMSP. When it is completed, the findings will be sent to the District Attorney’s office.
