ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Police are investigating a shooting that left a 7-year-old boy critically wounded overnight in southwest Albuquerque.

Officers responded around 3 a.m. Thursday to a home in the 8900 block of Lower Meadow Trail S.W., near Dennis Chavez and Unser.

A man reportedly called 911, saying his girlfriend shot him and that her young son was also hit by gunfire.

Police and rescue personnel responded to the home and took the boy to the hospital, where he is in critical condition, according to APD.

In an update Thursday evening, police said charges will be filed against the mother. She reportedly shot her boyfriend in the leg, and the bullet went through his leg and hit her child.

Police say the boy is alive, but it’s not looking good.
