ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — This is the first election since state lawmakers redrew New Mexico’s three congressional districts, changing the political landscape.

District 1 makes up most of central New Mexico, District 2 covers the south and west, and District 3 covers the north and east.

District 1 had two Republican candidates – Louie Sanchez and Michelle Garcia Holmes. Garcia Holmes will face off with Democrat incumbent Melanie Stansbury in the fall.

In District 2, Republican Rep. Yvette Herrell will face off against Democrat Gabe Vasquez, the projected winner over Darshan Patel.

“I’m not a typical politician. I don’t come from money, I don’t come from a wealthy family, I don’t come from a political family. I am simply somebody who is standing up for the values of our community and I think our voters are going to see that – that I can bring home results in Congress that aren’t based on politics that aren’t partisan but they are in the best interest of our community,” said Vasquez.

District 3 Democrat Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez will face Republican challenger Alexis Martinez Johnson – who ran unopposed.
