Some Carson National Forest trails close to support tribal communities

TAOS, N.M. — Some trails within the Carson National Forest will be closed for a week to support tribal community requests.

The requests are for traditional and cultural purposes. The trails closing are:

  • Williams Lake
  • Wheeler Summit
  • Wheeler Peak, between La Cal Basin and Wheeler Peak
  • Lost Lake, between Horseshoe Lake and Wheeler Peak

The Williams Lake basin, including Kachina and Lake Fork peaks – as well as the ridgeline from east of Taos Cone to Simpson Peak – will also be closed.

All of these areas will reopen Monday, August 28. Officials are encouraging visitors to check out other trails in the Taos Ski Valley area.
