TAOS, N.M. — Officials with the Taos County Sheriff’s Office confirmed an Arizona man collapsed and died Sunday while hiking Wheeler Peak.

Dispatch received a call early Sunday morning about a man who collapsed and fell near the summit of Wheeler Peak.

They learned he and his wife were walking with his friends, all medical doctors. When he collapsed and fell off the trail beneath the summit, they performed CPR on him.

However, their resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Authorities identified the man as 61-year-old Renwick Jay Guyer, of Marana, Ariz. Taos Ski Valley fire crews recovered his body Monday after poor weather delayed their efforts.

An autopsy hasn’t been performed yet. There is no official word on the cause of death.
