ALBUQUERQUE, N.M — A film festival in New Mexico is not so surprising with the booming film industry in the state.

But on Sunday, a different kind of festival filled up classic building downtown.

At the Historic Lobo Theater, high schoolers and middle schoolers were the artists racking up awards on stage.

The winners helped award their schools with funding as well.

Over 800 students from nearly 60 different schools in the state participated over the weekend in the Film Prize Jr. New Mexico competition.

People came out to watch the films on Saturday, and on Sunday, voters made their picks.

Janeyre Stockson was one of the winners at the festival. The sophomore from Data Charter won best of animation for the high school selection.

“It was a short film about two thieves going on a heist,” Stockton said.

This film festival comes just a few days after the announcement of the New Mexico Media Academy at the Rail Yards — another sign of growth for the state’s film industry.
