QUESTA, N.M. – A memorial service was held Saturday for a 13-year-old girl killed in Questa.

Authorities say Amber Archuleta was killed when another teen, a 14-year-old boy, took out a gun and shot her.

On Saturday, Archuleta’s father released a statement saying:

“Amber was not arguing with this boy. She was just quiet listening to music when this monster decided to use his father’s gun to kill my daughter. No one can understand how this murder happened.”

The boy’s father, William Brown, is now facing charges along with his son under Bennie’s Law – new legislation passed in 2023 that holds adults responsible if their child uses their gun in a crime.

“New Mexico citizens, if you have guns take this seriously because in an instant this can turn tragic.live are lost. These are children. It’s inexcusable,” said Eighth Judicial District Attorney Marcus Montoya.

Montoya’s office is handling the case. He says this should send a very strong state-wide message that gun owners are legally responsible if their weapons negligently get in the hands of minors.
