UPDATE: U.S. Highway 82 has been reopened as of Thursday afternoon.
ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — For the second time this year, a rockslide has closed a stretch of U.S. Highway 82 just east of Alamogordo.
New Mexico State Police and state transportation officials closed the highway between mileposts 1 and 7.
Crews worked overnight to clear the road and made some progress – but the road remains closed for now.

There is no word yet on how long the closure will last.
The rockslide also closed High Rolls Mountain Park Elementary School. Students had remote learning Thursday instead.
In January, a rockslide in this same area shut down U.S. 82 for days. Then, for a week in June, crews worked to remove potentially dangerous rocks and addressed safety concerns in that area.
